Professional Pilot Training

Ardmore Flying School

Ardmore Flying School offers professional flight training programmes covering Commercial Pilot (Aeroplane and Rotary), Instrument Rating and Instructor Rating. We are also able to offer Basic Gas Turbine, Frozen ATPL, Cockpit Resource Management, and Aeronautical Decision Making as well as the premier aviation related course in New Zealand. This is the Diploma of Aviation and Ardmore Flying School is in the envious position of being the only NZQA approved private training school in New Zealand authorised to present this course.

Specific Aviation English courses can be arranged in Auckland City with Language Studies International www.lsi.edu/en/auckland.html to assist students who have English as a second language.

Commercial Pilot's Licence

Learning to fly, at a professional level, requires careful planning and coordination. The emphasis today is very much on seamless training. In other words, airlines are wanting prospective employees to have been through a training programme that shows continuity, and a depth and breadth of experience that is required for an airline position.

Approved CPL Courses (Reduced 150 Hour Courses) - Because Ardmore Flying School meets the stringent requirements laid down by the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority, we are technically able to offer candidates a fixed wing CPL in only 150 hours total flying time.

However, Ardmore Flying School has no hesitation in stating that a 150 hours licence is impossible to achieve. The P in C (pilot in command) requirement for a CPL is 100 hours. This therefore, leaves only 50 hours in which to cover the dual component of both the private and commercial licenses. This is insufficient when one takes into account the various dual requirements as follows:

  • Night Flying
  • Cross Country
  • Instrument Flight Time
  • CPL Exercise

Additionally, if students intend to continue their training towards an instrument rating or instructors rating, there are additional hourly requirements that must be met. We recommend to all students to closely investigate any organisations advertising the ability to complete professional licenses in only 150 hours. An instructors rating requires 150 hours Pilot in Command.

We therefore follow the NZCAA policy of offering a 200 hour licence (subject to students meeting normal syllabus progress) involving 100 hours dual and 100 hours solo flight training.

Instrument Rating

There are four training options available to students:

  • omplete a single engined instrument rating and then convert to a Multi-engined instrument rating.
  • Complete initial training on a single and then convert to a multi for the flight test.
  • Do all training on a multi engine aircraft.
  • Complete half of the training on our AST300 Simulator (illustrated) and the balance on our multi-training aircraft the Beech 76.

The last option seems to be the choice of most students. This option is designed to give students a maximum number of multi hours (22 - 24 hours) during their training.

Some organisations suggest students complete a single engine instrument rating first and then carry out a multi endorsement removal. This reduces the overall cost only slightly but leaves students with minimal multi hours - hours that will be needed when applying for an airline position.

All flight time is on air switch.

The decision on where and how to train is clearly a most important decision. Therefore, if at all possible, we would very much like the opportunity to arrange a suitable time for you to visit the school so we can discuss training options in greater detail.

A visit would also give you the opportunity to view our facilities first hand. Over recent years we have completed the most number of multi instrument ratings in New Zealand and our students have enjoyed an excellent pass rate.

We are happy to discuss the various options - ADVANTAGES / DISADVANTAGES. Please contact us for further details.
